DfT agrees temporary contract to run TSGN franchise

20 February 2014/Categories: Industry News

The Department for Transport (DfT) has agreed a temporary contract to run commuter services for its new rail franchise.

First Capital Connect (FCC) has been awarded an extension on its current deal to oversee the Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern (TSGN) network for the next six months. This is intended to bridge the gap between now and the creation of a new franchise, which comes into operation in September.

The new contract covers the areas of London, Bedford, King's Lynn and Brighton, and will be the largest franchise in the country. The DfT hopes the project will revolutionise rail travel in and out of the capital.

Secretary of state for transport Patrick McLoughlin commented: "The new contract with FCC represents the best deal for passengers and taxpayers. It ensures the continuity of the existing service and guarantees the completion of the ongoing Thameslink programme."

This announcement is the fourth contract award delivered by the DfT, following agreements with Virgin Trains, c2c and First Great Western. Invitations to tender have also been released for two further rail franchises.
