Network Rail has announced it is to build a new bridge in a bid to improve safety at a rail crossing in Lincoln.

The structure will be constructed over the high street in the city, which was described as one of the worst crossings for misuse in the country. It will be accessible 24-hours-a-day for both pedestrians and cyclists and will involve the purchase and modification of a building adjacent to the line.

Businesses that operate in the area have been assured the bridge will be built without the crossing needing to be closed, as the railway company seeks to minimise any disruption caused by the work. 

Phil Verster, route managing director at Network Rail gave an insight into the level of misuse at the crossing. He said: "Incidents range from people running across after warnings have started to thoroughly reckless acts such as lifting or climbing over the barriers once they are down." He added that the risk of an accident was so serious, the company had no choice but to act.

The purchase of the building at 179 High Street is unlikely to be completed until the autumn, with the bridge itself anticipated to open in late 2015.
