DfT releases mid-year report

23 January 2014/Categories: Industry News

The Department for Transport has released its mid-term report.

Covering the period April-September 2013, the document outlines the key achievements made during these months.

The railway network was buoyed by the agreement of a £16 billion investment package for HS2, plus the ambitious Crossrail project completing over 19km of tunnelling by September. Progress was also made in terms of franchising, with the government producing a timetable for all projects over the next eight years. It also published tenders for the Essex Thameside and Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern lines.

By 2015, £317 million of investment will be put into the Highways Agency's pinch point programme to deliver small scale improvements on the road network. Construction will also be underway on 53 major schemes, with 200 miles of additional lanes being added to the country's motorways.

In terms of aviation, the report highlights the creation of the Airports Commission as a major step forward in maintaining the UK's position as a key travel hub. The country already has direct air links to over 360 destinations across the world.

The report comes as the government has announced a £9.5 billion investment in the transport network between 2015-2016. It has also set out long-term budgets for its major projects, such as HS2, national roads and Transport for London.
