More robust transport network needed, says MP

07 January 2014/Categories: Industry News

The UK needs a more robust transport network, one Labour MP has stated.

Louise Ellman admitted the resilience of the country's transport infrastructure and services to winter weather has improved in recent times, but more can still be done.

She was speaking at the launch of a House of Commons' transport committee report into this very issue, which sought to find out how the nation can better handle the effects of snow, storms and severe gales.

Ms Ellman pointed out thousands of travellers were stranded at Gatwick over the Christmas period due to a power failure brought on by the weather and she is calling on the Civil Aviation Authority to get to the bottom of this.

"We believe there remains considerable scope for further improvement across the transport sector," she added.

Among the measures outlined are for the Highways Agency to review the barriers to providing comprehensive real-time information to drivers and for the Office of Rail Regulation to develop more robust procedures.
