£100m festive rail improvement project completed

02 January 2014/Categories: Industry News

Over £100 million was spent over the Christmas period improving the UK's rail network.

A number of projects were undertaken, including the electrification of Manchester Victoria so trains can run between Manchester and Liverpool.

It means that new tracks, longer platforms and better footbridges have been installed at stations throughout the country.

The decision to undertake the work was influenced by the fact the festive period is typically one of the quietest times of the year, so commuter disruption is minimal.

A Network Rail spokesperson stated both passengers and businesses will notice the difference the upgrades have made.

"The work carried out this Christmas and new year period is part of our plan for a bigger, better railway and means the industry can cater for the continuing growth in demand for rail travel," they added.

As a result of the programme, Gatwick Airport station now has a new platform, track and signalling equipment.
