DHL looking into drone deliveries

10 December 2013/Categories: Industry News

DHL is looking into the potential of using drones to deliver goods.

So far the company has been testing the technology in Germany, with remote controlled aircraft running over the River Rhine near the company's headquarters in Bonn.

The company has said it is researching the option and has no current plans to implement it.

It comes shortly after Amazon announced its own drone delivery service experiments, as the company seeks to use the system in the US by 2015. This aims to deliver goods within 30 minutes of being ordered online.

However, this would arguably require facilities close to various major locations and, even then, more remote areas may still need tradition distribution and logistics solutions. Amazon's plans have also been met with scepticism from other parties.

During an interview with Bloomberg, eBay's chief executive officer John Donahoe referred to the project as a long-term fantasy.

As an example, eBay already offers its Now service in various US cities. This provides deliveries within an hour, without drone technology, and could be easily implemented in other countries.
