Strikes close Zagreb Airport for 2 days

21 November 2013/Categories: Industry News

Zagreb Airport will be closed for two days as workers strike over planned extensions.

Originally reported by state-run newspaper Hina, the facility will be shut down from 09:00 GMT today (November 21st) until 23:00 GTM tomorrow. During this time the only flights allowed to use Zagreb will be emergency, government or military aircraft.

The action comes after four airport unions expressed concerns over recent expansion plans by consortium ZAIC, with staff worried jobs may be reduced in the future.

Reuters, citing Hina, states 120 flights would be cancelled as a result of the actions, costing the airport around 900,000 kuna (£98,000) each day.

A spokesman for the airport said: "In the course of [the strikes] airlines have organised passenger transfers through (via) alternative airports, and some of the airlines have cancelled their flights instead."

Last year, ZAIC was awarded a 30-year concession for the airport, which is led by Aeroport de Paris. As part of this, the group is planning to build a new terminal with an aim to increase capacity to five million each year. Currently, it handles an annual amount of around two million.
