Middle classes 'key to air cargo future success'

23 October 2013/Categories: Industry News

Emerging economies such as China hold the key to the future growth of air cargo.

This is according to Desmond Vertannes, global head of cargo at International Air Transport Association, who thinks the middle classes in these nations will drive an increase in freight.

Speaking to Air Cargo World, he said many people from China do not necessarily want to purchase goods from that country, instead preferring to buy from the US or Europe, which should help the east-west air trade balance.

When it comes to identifying potential trends in the sector, it is always worthwhile looking at world trade growth and this is why Brazil, Russia, India and China are likely to play an important role.

Mr Vertannes also believes megacities and their desire to attract new people will be good for the industry.

"Trying to power them, clothe them, feed them [and] educate them - they're going to need air cargo, I can tell you, because they're not all residing near ports," he added.
