Plans have been submitted to build a new £250 million trolleybus system in Leeds.
The city's New Generation Transport (NGT) scheme and will feature the return of trolleybuses - not seen in the UK since 1972. They are similar to normal buses but are powered through overhead cables. Leeds was previously served by trolleybuses between 1911 and 1928.
The department for transport would contribute £173.5 million of the total, with the other £77 million being funded by Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Metro.
Chairman of Metro James Lewis said: "We will work hard to resolve issues where it is practicable to do so, but we are convinced the benefits of NGT will bring to Leeds and West Yorkshire will outweight objections to the scheme."
Current proposals plot a route connecting the city centre with park-and-ride locations at the northern Holt Park and the southern Stourton.
The plans are to be considered by the transport secretary to determine whether or not a public inquiry is necessary.
