The new chairman of the HS2 Growth Taskforce Lord Deighton has discussed the benefits of the development today (September 19th).
Speaking at the Greengauge 21 conference, Lord Deighton referred to the high speed rail project as "a springboard for economic growth".
He cited recent research by KPMG - which suggested the scheme could provide annual benefits of £15 billion. It was also argued that development of the HS2 would be an example to the rest of the world, encouraging investors.
It was also stated that many benefits can be seen now, with improvements in skills, supply chains and the development of stations along and near the route.
Lord Deighton said: "As a country we have underinvested in our infrastructure for too long. We need to think big and make bold decisions to stay globally competitive."
The taskforce met earlier this month in Birmingham and plans to tour the country, listening to public opinions on relating to the HS2 project.
