Worldwide Aeros Corp is making progress developing a range of Zeppelins that may have an impact on global transportation.
According to Business Insider, the first prototype Aeroscraft Airship is due for its maiden voyage. The prototype and technology was funded by a $3 million (£1.9 million) grant from the US government.
It includes a new way to compress helium to change the weight of the Aeroscraft when needed - removing the risks and safety issues that blighted early attempts with Zeppelins.
They are not as fast as modern aeroplanes - only going up to 115 mph compared to 500mph - but require only a third of the fuel. Additionally, they do not require a runway as it can land and take off in most conditions - including on water.
If tests go well, production is expected to start at some point in 2015. It will come in two sizes. The smaller $25 million model will carry up to 66 tonnes, while the $55 million model will manage 250 tonnes.
