Wrexham to Bidston rail upgrade discussed

23 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

A group of key stakeholders have been assembled to discuss plans to electrify the rail line between Wrexham and Bidston.

Members were brought together by Secretary of State for Wales David Jones as part of his on-going push to improve rail infrastructure in North Wales.

Mr Jones said: "The existing Manchester Metrolink and the Midland Metro project are clear examples of how improved infrastructure links can bring far-reaching benefits, through job creation and economic output."

According to the Wales Office, the country is ready to benefit from near £2 billion from the UK government for modernising its rail systems. A faster service will be made available to nearly two-thirds of the Welsh population upon completion.

Similar electrification programmes are being established in the north of England, with Network Rail investing £160 million into the route between Manchester and Liverpool.

Participants at the meeting included the Liverpool Local Enterprise Partnership, Wirral Waters Enterprise Zone and the North Wales Economic Ambition Board.
