Hong Kong experiencing cargo growth

20 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported a rise in the amount of cargo handled after experiencing strong growth in July.

A year-on-year increase of five per cent was experienced. The airport also reported that cargo to and from North America outperformed other regions. Its cargo volume increased by 1.9 per cent year-on-year, with a total of 341,000 tonnes.

Throughout the first seven months of the year, there was a rise in cargo volume of two per cent, with 2.3 million tonnes. On a 12-month rolling basis, HKIA handled 4.1 million tonnes.

Yet the airport also experienced growth in terms of passengers with an increase of 14 per cent year-on-year. This also included 362,685 aircraft movements.

Stanley Hui Hon-chung, chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said: "It is encouraging to see HKIA achieving new records in monthly passenger volume and flight movements."

He also commented on the joint air and sea services offered by the airport, which provide ferry services connecting to ports across the Pearl River Delta area.
