Why freight companies must not negate health and safety

16 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Although many logistics firms are still feeling the pinch, it is vital that they do not let health and safety standards slip.

While the economy has shown signs of recovery in recent months, a lot of hauliers have been forced to take drastic action to slash their outgoings, but skimping on worker safety measures is not a cost-effective option in the long run.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is constantly dishing out substantial financial penalties to organisations that fail to protect their staff and the public.

A Suffolk-based freight organisation has been fined £50,000 this week (August 15th) after pleading guilty to health and safety breaches.

The firm was hauled in front of magistrates after a forklift accident left a man with a broken back.

He was waiting for his trailer to be loaded when the truck hit a pothole, tipping it over.

Unfortunately, incidents of this nature are far too common in the UK and companies need to do more to improve safety at their warehouses and distribution centres.
