Are Severn Estuary Airport plans flawed?

15 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Chief executive officer at Bristol Airport Robert Sinclair believes plans to introduce a new aviation hub in the Severn Estuary are flawed.

If the Airports Commission decides the proposals are a good idea, an airport would be built in the area by 2029, with Cardiff and Bristol Airports being closed as a result.

Mr Sinclair thinks the concept is unworkable and he highlighted the fact that similar plans were rejected ten years ago.

"It is difficult to see how a different conclusion could be drawn today," he remarked.

Bristol Airport has been performing well in recent months, with figures suggesting the site handled a record number of passengers in June 2013.

More than 625,000 people passed through the terminal during the four-week period, which was a 3.4 per cent improvement on the corresponding month in 2012. It was also a 15,000 increase on the previous record that was set back in 2008.
