Uninsured drivers 'present significant risk'

29 July 2013/Categories: Industry News

One in every 200 vehicle owners on the UK's roads have been found guilty of driving without insurance, meaning freight providers must be additionally wary of being involved in accidents with members of this group.

A freedom of information request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to the Department for Transport highlighted this worrying statistic, with 226,803 cases of individuals with current points on their licence for this offence.

Driving without insurance is not only illegal, it also places a considerable financial burden on law-abiding motorists and businesses, who have to foot the whole of the bill for repairs and damage caused to their vehicle when involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "The most concerning fact is that this could just be the tip of the iceberg, as these numbers only represent those who have been caught and penalised."

Overall, the information request showed men aged between 17 to 24 years old are the most likely to offend in this manner.
