Will HS2 benefit people outside London?

22 July 2013/Categories: Industry News

The government has urged the leaders of cities outside London to do all they can to ensure the High Speed 2 (HS2) project creates new job opportunities.

HS2 has come in for serious criticism since the plans were first unveiled by the authorities earlier this year, with a number of influential figures and organisations suggesting the multi-billion pound line will be a waste of money.

However, the government is adamant the route - which will slash journey times between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds - will bring huge economic benefits to many parts of the country.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said HS2 will create 19,000 construction and engineering jobs from 2017, while the ongoing Crossrail development has also provided the UK with an employment boost, as 97 per cent of the contracts were won by British firms.

"HS2 provides a once in a generation opportunity to drive growth, generate jobs, develop skills and secure our country's future prosperity," he remarked.
