Plans to upgrade a rail freight line that runs between Peterborough and Spalding have caused concern among people who live close to the route.

The government is keen to see more cargo moved around the country via trains, as this is seen as a much more eco-friendly method of transportation than HGVs.

Network Rail hopes to reduce congestion on the East Coast Mainline by putting more freight trains on to the Great Northern Great Eastern Line and the work is set to be completed by April 2014.

However, the Peterborough Telegraph reports that some Werrington residents are not happy about a proposed £280 million revamp of the local railway infrastructure.

Many people are worried about increased noise pollution and there are concerns that this will impact the value of homes along the route.

A spokesperson for Network Rail told the news provider the upgrade will get rid of the "clanking noises" that the old line made and the firm is doing all it can to minimise the din made by passing trains.
