Sainsbury's is the latest firm to demonstrate its commitment to cutting carbon emissions after it increased its dual-fuel fleet to 51 vehicles.

The company said that each truck saves around 41 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the air and the latest upgrade will reduce its output by 25 per cent overall.

In total, Sainsbury's new-look fleet will deliver CO2 reductions equivalent to taking more than 900 cars off the road each year.

Logistics businesses are desperate to become more eco-friendly for two reasons. Firstly, it is important that everyone takes the fight against climate change seriously and secondly firms are being crippled by excessive fuel prices.

Sainsbury's new vehicles use a combination of diesel and bio-methane that is derived from rotting organic material.

Head of transport operations at the company Nick Davies said a trial run of the dual-fuel technology went very well.

"We have already achieved a number of efficiencies across our transport operations, including cutting almost eight million kilometres in three years," he remarked.
