UK's first open access Bio-LNG station opens

29 May 2013/Categories: Industry News

Transport minister Norman Baker was on hand to open the UK's first open access Bio-LNG filling station in Daventry, Northamptonshire.

Operated by Gasrec, the site will supply trucks with the company's renewable, organic fuel, which is a blend of liquefied natural gas and liquid biomethane.

It is hoped that more logistics firms will be encouraged to fill their vehicles with this more eco-friendly fuel and the opening of the Daventry station marks the start of a major drive to slash overall HGV emissions by nearly two-thirds.

Fuel prices have been a sore subject among haulage businesses of late, with companies putting increasing pressure on the government to lower duty rates. At the same time, the authorities are keen to take as many lorries off the road as possible in order to reduce the country's CO2 output.

As such, this new Bio-LNG station is a positive development for all concerned.

Mr Baker said: "The innovation shown by Gasrec and its partners in projects like this can help the UK meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets while creating green jobs to build the economy."
