Transport Committee calls for Heathrow expansion

10 May 2013/Categories: Industry News

MPs on the Transport Committee have urged the government to give the green light to an expansion of Heathrow.

The group believes the best way to solve the airport capacity issues in the south-east of England is to add a third runway at the busiest aviation hub on the planet.

In a report released today (May 10th), the Committee also rejected calls for a new hub airport to the east of London, which will no doubt please campaigners in Kent who have been lobbying against the proposals.

Louise Ellman, chair of the House of Commons' Transport Committee, said that building a brand new airport would require huge amounts of public investment. She also ruled out linking existing airports via high-speed rail services.

"We conclude that a third runway at Heathrow is necessary, but also suggest that a four-runway proposal may have merit," she remarked.

The Committee also advised the government to establish a national scheme to provide adequate compensation for people who are affected by increased noise levels that an expansion of Heathrow may bring.
