Kent residents are against new airport plans

09 May 2013/Categories: Industry News

The majority of people in Kent appear to be against plans to create a new hub airport in the Thames Estuary.

Conservative MP for Rochester and Strood Mark Reckless launched his "No Estuary Airport" campaign, which involved him sending out 10,000 ballot papers to residents of the Hoo Peninsula.

So far, 3,700 have lodged a response and 95 per cent are against a proposed aviation facility in the area. An online petition against the potential development has also garnered strong support from people outside Kent.

Concerns have been raised about a lack of runway capacity in the south-east of England, with airports like Heathrow operating at close to full capacity, and a new Kent-based airport is one of many suggestions that have been made as a way of creating more space.

However, Mr Reckless insisted the proposals are "pie in the sky" and the cost of building the airport - which could reach £100 billion - would force ticket prices up.

"I am hopeful that we can now expand my No Estuary Airport campaign to the rest of the Rochester and Strood constituency," he remarked.
