Cambridge railway station set for £4.25m upgrade

02 May 2013/Categories: Industry News

Cambridge railway station could be set to receive a £4.25 million facelift in the next year or so, Network Rail has revealed.

The company confirmed that funds have been released by developer Brookgate and work to improve the station's facilities could get underway in late summer, with a target completion date set for mid-2014.

An application for listed building consent is now being discussed and a public consultation will be launched before any work starts.

Greater Anglia - which manages the station - will deliver the improvements and head of projects at the firm Alan Pickering said the transformation reflects the "continued growth and usage of the station".

The work will complement a £16.7 million island platform that was built at the station in 2011, which enabled 12-carriage trains to operate between Cambridge and Liverpool Street.

Last month, Network Rail revealed the main station in another famous university city - Oxford - is also set to undergo a major overhaul.
