Co-op completes overhaul of UK logistics network

25 April 2013/Categories: Industry News

The Co-operative Group has opened a new £22 million distribution centre in north Derbyshire and bosses say this marks the completion of a major overhaul of the company's UK logistics network.

Castlewood CDC covers 480,000 sq ft and can be found just off Junction 28 of the M1.

The facility will operate 24 hours a day and is capable of handling 3,600 deliveries every week, providing stock for 528 Co-operative stores throughout Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Co-operative Food initially started to improve its supply chains in 2004 and chief executive Steve Murrells said: "The opening of Castlewood marks a major milestone for The Co-operative and the completion of a radical revamp of our entire logistics network."

It is always encouraging to see new warehouses and distribution centres being built in the UK, as a number of recent studies have shown that such facilities are in desperately short supply.

Co-op confirmed that 300 new jobs have been created thanks to the new Castlewood CDC.
