Plans to introduce half-mile-long freight trains in Scotland could be submitted this summer.

PDS intends to expand its Mossend freight railhead in Lanarkshire and this could pave the way for 770-metre freight trains, the Scotsman reports.

At the moment, the longest cargo trains measure in at 600 metres, while the longest passenger service in Britain - the Caledonian Sleeper - is 400 metres long.

PDS also revealed the option of using slower freight trains on the West Coast Main Line route between Glasgow and London is still being considered.

That said, the firm insisted that adding new "supertrains" from Mossend would significantly increase capacity without taking up additional railway "slots"

Scotland's railway infrastructure is undergoing plenty of changes, with Network Rail recently announcing the Borders Railway development is now underway and it seems that passenger and freight service providers will benefit hugely from the improvements.

Rail freight has become increasingly popular throughout the UK in recent years, as it is seen as a far more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option than road transportation.
