More than 19 million motorists in the UK think that speed cameras only exist to make money, rather than to improve road safety standards.
A new survey conducted by Gocompare.com has shown that 70 per cent of the nation's drivers believe the technology is merely used to boost the government's coffers and 45 per cent felt that they do not prevent accidents at all.
The research also raised questions about how effective the cameras are, as one in three motorists admitted to slowing down for a Gatso before speeding up again.
Some 35 per cent of road users said they break the speed limit when they consider it safe to do so, while almost half of respondents want cameras to be removed completely.
"The financial impact of being caught speeding can be severe. As well as the fine, an endorsement on your license can also lead to increased car insurance premiums," commented Scott Kelly, head of motor at Gocompare.com.
There had been talk of the government potentially raising the speed limit on motorways to 80 mph, but this no longer looks likely to happen.
