The European Commission will launch proposals for a new lorry design that will enhance road safety and save logistics firms significant sums of money.

EU chiefs have come up with a more rounded look for truck cabs, which they believe will reduce the impact of collisions and also improve aerodynamics.

Lorries make up just three per cent of overall European traffic, yet they account for 25 per cent of accidents and they are renowned for being a particular menace to cyclists.

A circular frontage will reduce air resistance by 12 per cent and this will cut fuel consumption by up to five per cent, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

With many haulage firms bemoaning the high price of fuel in the UK at the moment, these new-look trucks are likely to prove extremely popular, if indeed they are entered into production.

"Design changes to the nose of the lorry cab will help to reduce severe injuries and save hundreds of lives each year," commented European Federation of Road Traffic Victims president Jeannot Mersch, who added that these changes should be mandated for all lorries as soon as possible.
