Nearly three-quarters of AA members think the best way to enhance road safety standards in the UK is to improve the condition of the nation's highways.

The breakdown company confirmed that 68 per cent of the poll also wanted to see drivers receive better training, while 63 per cent called for a complete drink-drive ban.

AA president Edmund King thinks the UK has done an excellent job of forcing down road accident casualty figures in the past few decades and the country is now top of the European Road Safety League.

"We have gone from 146 fatalities per million inhabitants in 1965 to 28 fatalities per one million in 2012," he remarked.

However Mr King added that "more can be done to stop five people being killed each day" on the UK's roads.

Unfortunately, public sector budget cuts have had a negative impact on the condition of Britain's roads.

Warranty Direct recently stated that the pothole problem is likely to get worse before it gets better.
