World-first trailer steering development set to be unveiled

21 March 2013/Categories: Industry News

A "world-first" development that will make significant improvements to the safety and maneuverability of long semi-trailers on the UK's roads will be unveiled next month.

The Path Following Steering System allows trailers to follow directly in the path of the tractor they are attached to, which will make it far easier for drivers to control their loads.

Designed by engineers from Cambridge University and companies including Wincanton, SDC Trailers, TRIDEC, Haldex and Goodyear, the system will be displayed for the first time at the CV Show.

With a commercial prototype already available, it is hoped the technology can be trialled later this year and logistics firm Wincanton is set to be the first organsiation to put it through its paces.

David Cebon, professor of mechanical engineering at Cambridge University, said: "We have developed an engineering solution that virtually eliminates the trailer's excursions from the path of the tractor unit at all speeds."

Earlier this week, the London Cycling Campaign unveiled a futuristic new lorry design, which it believes will help cut down on the number of accidents involving cyclists and HGVs.
