Easter rail upgrades finished on time

10 April 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Rail

Network Rail has completed its major programme of infrastructure upgrades scheduled for the Easter long weekend across England.

In contrast to the chaos caused by works carried out over Christmas, the latest £100 million improvements have all been finished on time, minimising the disruption caused to commuters.

The projects include work to completely rebuild London Bridge Station, new freight lines under the Reading viaduct, a rail-over-road bridge to the south of Watford Junction and new overhead power lines on the route between Liverpool Street and Norwich at Chadwell Heath, Romford and Ilford.

Network Rail’s chief executive Mark Carne said: “Our 14,000-strong army were determined to make sure everything went to plan this weekend and I’m proud to say it did. I’d like to thank people for their patience as I know our work caused some planned disruption.

“The improvements made this weekend are a vital part of our £38 billion investment programme which will deliver a better railway in the weeks, months and years ahead.”
