It has already become clear that transport will be a key issue at the ballot box for next month’s general election. Now the Conservative Party have made the issue a key part of their campaign by promising to freeze rail fares for four years if they win on May 7th.
The pledge includes the price of season tickets, meaning that commuters across England would be able to save an average of £400 over the course of the next Parliament.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post during a campaign visit to the region, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “It shouldn’t just be taken for granted that people across the country who get up early and come home late, spend a large amount of the money they earn travelling to and from work.”
He also promised transport devolution for city regions in Yorkshire, regardless of whether they decide to have a London-style directly elected mayor.
