Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM), a professional accreditation body for the sector, is planning to establish an organisation exclusively for women in the logistics and transport sector.
The
This is to meet the growing needs of women in the sector.
This organisation, called the Women in Logistics and Transport (Wilat), will be under the purview of CILTM. CILTM president Datuk Abd Radzak Abd Malek said that women had contributed positively in the logistics and transport sector but currently they are not represented.
"With this organisation under an international body like CILTM, they would have a better platform for networking and conducting their own programmes. "I plan to launch this by next year," Radzak said in a statement recently.
On the potential members of Wilat, Radzak said that besides the existing CILTM members, the organisation would also open its doors to any women professionals serving in the industry.
"It doesn't matter if they have non-related professional qualifications. As long as they are working in the transport and logistics sector, they are welcome to join. "For the non-CILTM members, this organisation will be a spring board to become a chartered member of CILTM," he said.
Previously, Radzak said CILTM had successfully spearheaded efforts to set up an organisation for the youth in the industry.
"Now, transport and logistics students as well as professionals under 35-years-old have an avenue to discuss related career issues and opportunities as well as networking," he said.
Also in the pipeline, according to Radzak is the formation of humanitarian logistics organisation.
"This will be a specialised organisation where transport and logistics would play their part in helping those affected by famine, draught, floods, earthquakes as well as tsunamis. "Unlike commercial logistics and transport, this specialised sub-sector of the industry will work together with other charitable and humanitarian organisations to make sure that medicine and food are provided fast to those in need. "We have the professionals to advise on the fastest and safest routes and the type of vehicles to reach the target," he said. He added that the idea was mooted at the last CILT International Council Meeting in Birmingham in June.
He said the humanitarian logistics organisation was expected to be launch at the 2014 CILT International Council Meeting, where Malaysia will be the host country. CILTM also announce that Radzak was elected International vice-president for CILT International at its last council meeting in June. This is the second time Radzak had been entrusted with such a responsibility. His previous term of IVP was from 2005 to 2010.
