Academics from Glyndwr University have suggested that driverless cars could be a good solution to the lack of public transport in many rural areas of Wales.
They also claimed that the narrow, winding roads made an excellent location for testing the new technology to ensure its safety. However, driverless cars are unlikely to be available in the near future.
Lecturer Barry said: "I think we're looking at five to ten years before something like this could become a reality and it would of course need the consent of people living in rural areas, with all of their concerns addressed."
The vehicles could be used as a less expensive alternative to taxis for many in the valleys, who often have to commute long distances to work in larger towns and cities. The researchers have now submitted their plans to the Welsh government so that they can be factored into the next Transport Strategy for Wales.
