EEF calls for EU referendum and hopes for continued union

26 May 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain

EEF - the manufacturers' association has called on the government to announce a referendum on European Union (EU) membership at the earliest opportunity.

It was suggested that the date should be no later than 2016 - and that an earlier date would serve to assuage the uncertainty that has been introduced for businesses and industry.

EEF chief executive officer Terry Scuoler said the longer businesses are uncertain as to the future of the UK in the EU, the more damaging this uncertainty could become.

He added that manufacturers "overwhelmingly" take the view that the economic wellbeing of the UK depends on continued EU membership.

"It makes no sense to disengage from our major market where we would still face all the costs of compliance and enjoy none of the influence," he commented, adding that regulatory reforms can be achieved by being an active member of the international body.
