The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has advised logistics operators to ensure they are fully prepared for the introduction of London's Safer Lorry Scheme well ahead of its introduction in September.
Almost all HGVs in the city will be required to be fitted with additional mirrors and side guards in order to comply with the new rules.
However, the regulations are very precise - and the FTA has noted that expert advice may be required for firms to fully adhere.
FTA head of engineering Andy Mair said dimension and installation requirements in particular are very complex.
"Operators may only realise that they have incorrectly installed side guards following enforcement action and fines under the new Safer Lorry Scheme," he warned.
Mr Mair highlighted the importance of checking vehicle types against the exempted vehicle list of the Transport for London website.
