Electrification of Bolton rail line nears completion

20 July 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Rail, Transport Planning

Work on the final bridge to be reconstructed on Bolton's train line is due to start on July 27th.

Grimeford Lane in Blackrod will close from that date until November 16th to allow the work to be completed.

The development forms part of the wider project to electrify the line between Manchester and Preston.

More than £1 billion is being invested in the north of England by Network Rail to improve rail services in the region.

Bridges have to be rebuilt to increase the clearance underneath to accommodate overhead lines that power trains on the electrified lines.

Project manager for Network Rail John Johnson said all services will be faster, more reliable and efficient as a result.

"We have worked closely with the local authority to plan the diversions and will complete the work in the quickest and safest possible way," he commented.
