Road Haulage Association (RHA) chief executive officer Richard Burnett has called for a new solution to ease congestion caused by traffic flowing across the Channel.
He argued that Operation Stack - designed to park up to 3,000 HGVs at any one time and relieve congestion on Kent's road network - is no longer fit for purpose.
Indeed, according to the RHA, almost 6,000 HGVs have sought space on the road network, causing tailbacks of up to 30 miles long.
Mr Burnett said strike action by workers at Calais and increasing numbers of immigrants attempting to cross the border into the UK has also exacerbated the issue.
"We need to see easily accessible and safe lorry parks for HGVs and their drivers who, through no fault of their own, have fallen victim to action on the other side of the Channel," he commented.
