Dr Ashley Steel has been appointed as non-executive director at the Civil Aviation Authority.

Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, has appointed Dr Ashley Steel as a new non-executive director to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Ashley will take up the post on 1 September 2015 for 3 years.

Ashley has recently retired from a long and successful career at KPMG. During her time there she held a number of senior management positions, including Vice Chair of the UK firm, UK and European board member for 7 years, and the role of Global Chair for Transport and Logistics for 12 years. This experience has allowed her to work directly with airlines, airports and tour operators, and build extensive domestic and international knowledge of the regulatory environment, working with government, and delivering organisational change.

Dame Deirdre Hutton, Chair of CAA, said: 'I am delighted that Dr Ashley Steel is to join the board of the CAA. She will bring a depth of knowledge of the aviation sector which will be of great benefit to the board and I very much look forward to working with her.'

In addition to her role at the CAA, Dr Steel has recently joined the International Business Advisory Board at British Airways, and has also become a Board Adviser to Mercator, a software and business process outsourcing company. Both of these roles have enhanced her knowledge of the aviation sector.

The appointment process for non-executive directors has been run according to the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA) guidelines. All appointments are made on merit on a personal basis, and political activity and affiliations play no part in the selection process.
