The Rail Freight Group (RFG) has called on the government to confirm that important rail line upgrades for freight are still due to go ahead.
This comes in the wake of the announcement that the Midland Main Line and Transpennine electrification schemes are to be unpaused.
Sir Peter Hendy's ongoing review of Network Rail's enhancement programme - which has led to work on some projects being paused - includes several key rail freight schemes.
Among these are an upgrade of the Felixstowe to Nuneaton route, which is expected to enable more imported goods to move by rail.
Elsewhere, work is paused on a project to enable longer, more efficient, trains to run from the Port of Southampton and from the Peak District quarries.
RFG executive director Maggie Simpson said: "The freight sector has waited long enough for confirmation that these critical schemes can go ahead as planned and deliver the expected benefits."
