£12m Moorfields station refurbishment to start in January

17 December 2015/Categories: Industry News

The second phase of the refurbishment of Moorfields train station in Liverpool is set to begin on January 4th 2016.

Network Rail is investing £12 million in Moorfields to upgrade its platform and escalators to provide a superior service to Liverpool's business district.

Part of the service will be disrupted during the time of the refurbishment until project completion, which is planned for spring 2016.

Operated by Merseyrail, this is the latest station to be redeveloped as part of a £40 million Network Rail investment.

Improvements will include new flooring, fresh enamel cladding on the walls and brighter lighting, making for a more pleasant travel environment.

The escalators, which are planned for refurbishment, currently carry over 6.5 million passengers a year and this number is projected to increase.

Speaking on the changes, area manager for Network Rail Chris Littler, said that this refurbishment is the final "upgrade of the underground stations in the Merseyside area".

Managing director at Merseyrail Jan Chaudry-van der Velde said that although the temporary closure of the station isn't ideal, customers will see "a real difference once it's finished next year".
