UK food supply chain at risk due to climate change

17 December 2015/Categories: Industry News

Climate change could seriously threaten the UK's food supply chain, according to a major supermarket.

Asda's chief executive has said that climate change is one of the biggest issues in the supply chain industry and the negative effects are already being felt, reports the BBC.

In terms of figures, a report from the supermarket chain showed that 95 per cent of its fresh produce is already at risk from climate change.

The supermarket chain, which is owned by Walmart, claims that the impact is only going to get progressively worse.

Asda's senior director for sustainable business Chris Brown has said that it is time for supermarkets to build a strategy to cope with the impacts of rising emissions, reports The Guardian.

He continued that there is more risk of acting "tactically rather than strategically as we won't have thought the implications through".

Mr Brown added that the shopper was unlikely to notice a difference in produce on shelves any time soon as supermarkets have "strategic investments to manage weather implications" to ensure their stores aren't short of supplies.
