The government has announced that it will spend up to £5.5 million to rebuild Elland Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

This funding from the government will also fund a temporary foot bridge, near the reconstruction work, which collapsed after the recent flooding, reports the Department of Transport.

Work is going ahead for the bridge as it's a listed structure and Calderdale Council will be rebuilding the bridge after it has gone through several structural assessments.

Ministerial flood recovery envoy for Yorkshire Robert Goodwill said: "We are determined to help the hardworking families and businesses of Yorkshire get back on their feet as soon as possible after these devastating floods."

He acknowledged that the bridge was paramount to the delivery of a good local transport system that is "the lifeblood of the region and key to a thriving economy".

Since Storms Eva and Desmond, the government has invested nearly £200 million towards the recovery of affected areas, with money sent to those that were particularly affected in Cumbria, Lancashire and Northumberland.
