Asda to review 5,000 staff jobs

25 January 2016/Categories: Industry News

Supermarket chain Asda will be reviewing the future of 5,000 members of its staff due to a range of in-store changes.

The changes include the closure of in-store canteens, photo centres and clothing counters, reports Food Manufacture.

Although the chain will be looking at 5,000 people in its consultation, it said that this does not necessarily reflect the amount of redundancies that the company will make.

Similarly, it said that many of its staff would simply be redeployed and would not suffer the risk of losing their jobs.

The process that Asda is undertaking to review its staff is being referred to as its Project Renewal, which will last for 45 days in total.

A spokeswoman from Asda said: "2015 was a tough year for supermarkets and Asda was no exception. We have entered into a consultation with our store colleagues on proposals, which we believe will enable us to react more quickly by becoming a leaner and more agile business."
