Construction begins on viaduct and bridges in Cheshire

12 February 2016/Categories: Industry News

Network Rail is set to begin construction on a project to protect iconic railways bridges in Cheshire that will cost £17 million.

The refurbishment aims to preserve the bridges, but it will also make the railway safer and more reliable for passengers who use the service.

While the changes are being made the line will be closed from Crewe to Manchester and Sandwich to Northwich between 13th and 24th February.

As part of this upgrade plan, the Grade II-listed viaducts at Holmes Chapel and Peover will be benefitting from a makeover. This will include the removal of water stains on the walls, repairs to the brickwork and much-needed waterproofing.

Network Rail has been working with the train operators that service the line on the bridge in order to cause as few disturbances to train services as possible before the work began.

Area director for Network Rail Terry Strickland said: "Network Rail has worked with the train operators to ensure all of this work can be conducted at the same time, saving £500,000 of taxpayers' money and avoiding longer-term disruption."
