Cummins announces logistics transformation for Manston

18 February 2016/Categories: Industry News

Manufacturing company Cummins has plans to turn its factory in Manston into a logistics centre.

The company will move its manufacturing to various plants in Daventry, Phaltan in India and Wuhan in China, according to various reports.

Cummins plans to remain at its site in Kent, but it will have a smaller staff and footprint after it becomes a regional distribution and logistics centre.

This will have an effect on the staffing levels at the site with several employees set to lose their jobs.

Speaking on the decision to change its business process ,the company said it was based on a lack of interest in its power generation equipment and that it hoped that these changes would give the company more long-term success.

Rich Freeland, chief operating officer of Cummins Inc., said: "By relocating our UK generator assembly operations to other locations, we can better balance our capacity with demand, and leverage our global supply chain strengths."

He continued: "We believe that making these changes will improve our manufacturing capabilities and processes, enhance our customer service, and generate efficiencies by further integrating our power generation and engine supply chains."
