Food and drink manufacturers urged to improve product recall systems

22 February 2016/Categories: Industry News

The government has announced that it will be urging businesses, and in particular food and drink manufacturing firms, to join a group to improve the system of product safety recalls.

This announcement has been part of the government's position on campaigner and journalist Lynn Faulds Wood's independent review of product safety recalls, reports Food Manufacture.

Last year, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills said that an investigation into this would be focusing on how to improve the enforcement of safety recalls and would also look into how consumers understand the process.

Ms Faulds Wood has said that manufacturers have been making consumer safety a "top priority" but that things were not working at optimum performance.

Supporting Ms Faulds Wood, the government will be looking into developing a business-led online 'centre of excellence'.

Giving her opinion, business minister Anna Soubry said: "People rightly deserve the assurance that if they buy a product that turns out to be unsafe, this can quickly be rectified. The government places a very high value on consumer safety, but industry also has a crucial role to play in protecting customers."
