Drumgrew Road bridge to open

11 March 2016/Categories: Industry News

Announced by Network Rail, Drumgrew Road and its bridge will reopen on Friday 15th April after it has been closed for eight months.

The closure was necessary in order to first demolish and then reconstruct the bridge over the railway, which led to further section closures.

One of those affected was a section of the B8048, which runs between Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch, which has been shut since August last year.

The completed reconstruction of the bridge will cost £2 million and it's part of a series of projects across central Scotland to create extra height beneath bridges.

Doing this will allow further work to continue to install overhead power cables underneath as part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP).

This programme is funded by the Scottish government and will see electrification on the trainlines roll across the central belt of the country in a bid to reduce travel times and increase capacity throughout routes.

Gary Murphy, Network Rail project manager, said that the company had hopes to have the bridge opened in March, but for the impact of the wet weather this year.
