An investment worth more than £800 million - which will be rolled out over the next three years to increase capacity and improve the daily journeys of half a million people - has been launched at London Waterloo.

This is Britain's busiest railway station and is the main access for one of the country's most heavily traversed railways.

The number of passengers that use London Waterloo has more than doubled over the past 20 years to 234 million per year. It's also expected for this figure to grow by another 40 per cent by 2043.

Plans for the investment are hoped to include expansion of the station, a new fleet of trains, longer platforms, improvements to depots and maintenance facilities and new technology to make the trains more efficient and more punctual.

The majority of the changes are being funded by the Department for Transport as part of Network Rail's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan.

Sir Peter Hendy, chairman of Network Rail, said: "This is the biggest package of improvements for passengers travelling to and from Waterloo for decades. It will provide passengers with a better station, extra seats and new trains."
