Network Rail successfully delivers work despite Storm Katie conditions

29 March 2016/Categories: Industry News

Despite the attempts of Storm Katie to disrupt the Easter weekend, Network Rail managed to complete 450 engineering projects planned during the bank holiday.

This £60 million Easter investment programme was part of the larger £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan from Network Rail.

Some of the work completed between March 25th and 28th included overhead lines and Crossrail work on the Great Eastern Main Line in London and the replacing of old track near Waterloo.

A nine-day programme of work was started in Manchester to improve its Victoria station and staff continued to replace 1,800 metres of old track that leads to Glasgow Queen Street allowing for improved travel between there and Edinburgh.

Storm Katie caused damage on Monday, March 28th on the East Coast mainline, in north-west London, the south-east of England and in Bognor. To fix the issues, engineers worked through the night to clear lines, make repairs and keep passengers and freight moving.

Mark Carne, Network Rail chief executive, said he was proud that the team could "deliver over 450 improvement projects that will make a difference to passengers and businesses who rely on the railway every day".
