Heathrow to introduce spare capacity notification system

30 March 2016/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Aviation, Transport Planning

A Web-based freight consolidation system, allowing hauliers servicing Heathrow airport to notify members of spare capacity on their vehicles, is to be launched this year in an attempt to improve air quality.

The airport said its proposed WebPortal would provide companies with an opportunity to exchange and share information about loads and once a match was found, operators could negotiate a price among themselves.

The portal is part of Heathrow’s Blueprint for Reducing Emissions, a 10-point plan that includes an off-airport DC, monitoring freight movements on local roads and tightening up its permit scheme for freight at the airport.

Head of cargo at Heathrow Nick Platts said: “Our cargo partners can reduce their costs, our local communities will experience less congestion and improved air quality, and Heathrow will build on its strength as an airport of choice for cargo.”

Despite delays, the airport is expected to roll out a secure, overnight truck park for distribution companies and plans to open it in 2017 following a trial this year.
